#3-French League Cup Final

March 29, 2008

Yesterday March the 29th, RC Lens and Paris Saint Germain faced off at the giant and legendary Stade de France in Paris for the French League Cup final. With both teams having a difficult year, this new trophy would definitely help the winner, who would also win an automatic qualification to the UEFA Cup next year. The first half was Paris SG’s as the opened the scoring in the 19th minute thanks to a smart lob by their emblematic Portuguese captain Pedro Miguel Pauleta. The second half, however, belonged to Lens who quickly equalized in the 52nd minute. Paris SG made some substitutions late in the half and this paid off as they dominated the last 10 minutes. As the game seemed destined for extra time, Paris SG were awarded a penalty in the 93rd minute. Bernard Mendy didn’t tremble as he comfortably scored to send a club, city, and nation of supporters into sheer heaven.                                                           300308_coupe_joie_paris_trophee.jpg

#2-Lost

March 28, 2008

ABC’s show Lost is currently playing it’s 4th season on TV. Lost is about plane flight 815, led 1,000 miles off course, which crashes onto a deserted island. The island, however, is a mysterious, unreal, and deadly place. About 50 passengers survive, but many of them die due to injuries from the crash or to the island. A leader, Jack, arises. He leads the people to the center of the island where they find caves to live in and fresh water to drink. As time passes by, they realize they are not alone. They end up finding a hatch inside the ground. As they open it up they find a man who has lived there for 3 years. He pushes a button every 108 minutes that he claims saves the world. Many things happen throughout the season but the big question always comes to mind. Where are they? Season 4 promises to answer that question as 6 survivors get off the island and get back to civilization.

#1-2010 World Cup Qualifying

March 26, 2008

On March 26, the 2010 World Cup, set to be in South Africa, saw it’s qualifying go underway in Asia, with a crucial epic encounter between China and the Socceroos of Australia. Having won their first match 3-0 versus Qatar, Australia topped the qualifying group. China, on the other hand, tied Iraq to gain a single point in their first match. As the match started, China knew that if they did not win they would still be 2 points behind the Australians. The match started and the first half ended 0-0 with no team taking the upper hand. However, the second half saw a busy Australian keeper, Mark Schwarzer, as China pressed to get a winner. In he 87th minute of the match, a golden opportunity presented itself as the Chinese were awarded a penalty. Shao Jiayi, the 27 year old midfielder, shot the penalty, but unfortunately, saw it saved by the in form Schwarzer. The game ended 0-0 the dismay of Chinese supporters and especially, Shao Jiayi.

#2-Spring Break

March 13, 2008

For us Pendleton kids, spring break at IMG academies is upon us. For an entire week, which is very little if you ask me, we are stress free. Stress free from school and sport. What we do, however, is our choice and it determines how much fun we shall have. I, on my part, am going back home, to Miami.  What is there to do you ask? Well, to start off, the beaches are definitely the main attraction for tourists. Other popular attractions are simply, malls, downtown Miami,  and Miami Beach. Anyone really looking for a new thrill without a doubt needs to go see a Miami Heat game. Even if they’re horrible this year, games at the American Airlines Arena are always spectacular. Miami knows how to have fun, and I can’t wait to go back.

#1-Who is the best soccer player in the world?

March 12, 2008

Who is the best soccer player on the planet? This question is the start to numerous debates around the world.  The midfielders and forwards get most of the votes, for they are the ones who score the goals. Lionel Messi, the Argentinian who plays for Barcelona, is a popular candidate for the best player nomination. Another player is last years Golden Ball and Fifa world player of the year winner. The Brazilian who plays for AC Milan won the Champions League last year, and even finished top scorer of the competition with 10 goals. However, in my opinion, Manchester United’s Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo is without a doubt the best player in the world. He’s the current top scorer in the English Premier League with 21 goals in 24 games. In addition to that, he’s also the current top scorer in the Champions League with 6 goals in 7 games. He surclasses everyone else with his fantastic ability to dribble and score.                  cristianoronaldo.jpg

#2-Cannes

March 4, 2008

Cannes is a city and commune in the French department of Alpes-Maritimes, and more precisely in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote D’Azur. Located in the extreme point of South-East France, Cannes is known as a crossroad between the Alps, Provence, Monaco, and neighbors Italy. The French Riviera city is one of Europe’s most famous cities, as it is a host of fancy hotels, beautiful cars, famous people, and glorious beaches. Its most famous event is the Cannes Film Festival. The Film Festival, which attracts many celebrities, is one of the world’s oldest, most influential, and prestigious film festivals in the world. The Film Festival is the second most known event worldwide, after the Olympic games of course. Cannes is also famous for its nightlife, with its ravishing one of a kind nightclubs, bars, and casinos. Cannes is where I was born and where I grew up.

#1-French League Cup

March 1, 2008

This week, the semi-finals of the French League Cup were played. Out of the 4 teams, 3 were positioned in the bottom of the league table. Le Mans were the favorites to attend the final. 4th in the league, they faced strugglers Lens. The match turned out to be an outstanding display of skills and goals. After 90 minutes, the game was deadlocked at 4-4. As it went into extra time, Lens stole the winner in the 119th minute, one minute before the penalty shootout, to make it 5-4. In the other match, France’s capital club Paris Saint Germain faced Auxerre. Better placed in the table, Auxerre still had to overcome a historical legend, for Paris SG are known to be Cup masters. Out of the last 15 finals, they have been involved in 10. The game was underway and Auxerre was no match for Paris SG, which scored two to make it 2-0 at the half. However, Paris SG goalkeeper Mikael Landreau mishandled a cross and scored an own goal to give Auxerre some hope. 4 minutes after that though, Paris SG scored a third. In the end, the match ended 3-2.
